Every two years, the world is treated to an event where professional aquatic sports athletes meet for the world championships. The World Aquatics Championships also referred to as the FINA World Championships include activities such as swimming, diving, and water polo. The events which are run by FINA are contested in a fifty-meter pool.

For those who may be hearing about the World Aquatics Championships for the first time, it is important to bring them up-to-date with the information on the tournament. The first information should be to answer the question “In which year were the world aquatics championships first held? Belgrade, Yugoslavia was the first city to hold the World Aquatics Championships in 1973 and since then the tournaments have been held every two years except in the period between 1978 to 1988 when the championships came every four years. From 2001 to 2019, the championships were held in the odd years.
Like most sporting activities, the championships were interrupted and have since become erratic. Fukuoka Japan was supposed to play host in 2021 but that was delayed to accommodate the 2020 summer games in the same country.
Although it will be the 2023 World Championships, it will have the title Fukuoka 2022. This is because the 20th edition of the championships was delayed due to COVID 19. Originally Fukuoka games were scheduled to be held in 2021 but were pushed back one year. The dates were 13th -29th May 2022.
These dates were later to be moved a second time. This time again due to the rise in infections rates in Japan after a successful Summer Olympics. The travel restrictions and the stringent measures that have been put in place by the Japanese government as a way of controlling the COVID-19 infections meant that it was not feasible to hold the games as earlier scheduled. In its place, Budapest was selected to host the event starting from 18th June -to 3rd July 2022. This will be the 19th edition of the competition.
Residents of Fukuoka, Japan will be lucky to have hosted the event twice; the first time was twenty-two years ago when in 2001, the aquatics sports athletes met in the city for the 9th edition of the FINA World Swimming Championships.
Among the disciplines that will be contested in the Fukuoka Championships include:
- Swimming in the categories of 50, 100, 200, 400, 800,1500 meters
- Diving both men’s and women’s events as well as mixed events which have been in place since the 2015 championships.
- High diving which includes 27 meters for men and 20 meters for women
- Open water swimming which includes 5, 10, 25, kilometers, and mixed team
- Synchronized swimming which includes solo, duet, team, and free combination
- Water polo for both men and women
The venues which will be hosting the event
Some may be interested in knowing something about the cost and they may be asking “for world aquatics championships how much will cost me?” This is a question that you may not get a clear answer for now since the event is one year away. However, as the Budapest event happens, it will be clear how much one may spend for the 20th edition.
When coming up with the cost, the organizers consider several factors including the inflation rates. Right now, every part of the world is experiencing the worst inflation in the recent past, an event occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the war in Ukraine. However, we hope that the situation will have improved and the economies will be performing better.
Back to the venues that will be holding this event, reports have it that most of the tournaments will be at Marine Messe. This is a venue that was built for the 1995 Summer Universiade, an event that is also referred to as the 18th Summer Universiade. Marine Messe will be hosting swimming and synchronized swimming, Kokusai center is where the water polo will happen, Fukuoka Prefectural pool will host diving while open water swimming and high diving will be held at Boat Race Fukuoka.
It will be interesting to find out how the world aquatics championship giants will perform. In the last event, the United States emerged as the winner garnering 622 points with 268 gold medals, 204 silver medals, and 150 bronze medals. China came second with 146, 106, and 74 gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively.
The third team was from Russia with 105, 73, and 62 gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively. It is not clear whether Russia will be fielding a team due to the recent bans, first in 2020 when the country was accused of doping issues, and secondly due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. It will also be interesting to find out how Australia, Germany, Hungary, Great Britain, and France perform since these teams have equally performed well in the previous tournaments.
Exactly one year and three months from now, it will be getting clearer which teams rule the world in the aquatics field. Bettors and fans in these sporting activities will have their field day while enjoying the tournament.
